Inspiration:
This art piece is a celebration of trailblazers, heroes, and dreamers, with a focus on the artist's personal inspiration: their family. Specifically, the artist honors their grandmothers, Huê Thị Trần and 區幗雄 (Tu-Muoi Au Van), who were both refugees from Vietnam seeking a better life in America. The piece depicts the two grandmothers in a boat surrounded by a sea of flowers, symbolizing the difficult journey they made to find a better future for their families. The grandmothers are dressed in coats adorned with daisies, which represent the amount of children they brought with them to America. Despite the hardships of seeking refuge, the artist wanted to portray their grandmothers in a more whimsical light, floating in a sea of flowers and leaves. This artwork is a touching tribute to the strength and resilience of the artist's family, and an ode to the many Asian Americans whose families sought refuge in a new country for a better life.
